Code-switching and borrowing in Irish
نویسنده
چکیده
Minority languages and code-switching Code-switching in bilingual communities has been extensively discussed (e.g. Clyne 2003; Myers-Scotton 1997, 2002; Poplack 2004). Here, code-switching is examined in Irish, an endangered language. Crystal (2000) noted that a significant increase in codeswitching is one of the signs that a minority language is coming under pressure from a majority language. It has been claimed that codeswitching has become more significant in recent years among Irish speakers, but to date this has rested mainly on anecdotal accounts. Here, some data are presented on the frequency and type of codeswitching among a key group of adult native Irish speakers: the Leaders of Irish-language preschools in Irishspeaking communities. The language use of this group in their interactions with preschool children is of particular interest, given their role in the transmission of the Irish language to the next generation. As necessary background the current position of Irish is summarised first and the contact between Irish and English is briefly reviewed.

Functions of Code-Switching Strategies among Iranian EFL Learners and Their Speaking Ability Improvement through Code-Switching
This study investigated the impact of code-switching on speaking ability of Iranian low proficiency EFL learners. Moreover, it was an attempt to show what functions existed behind code-switching strategies used by the EFL learners. To this end, 60 male and female Iranian EFL learners age-ranged between 20 and 30 participated in the study. Data collection instruments which were used were the Int...
متن کاملThe Production of Code-Mixed Discourse
We propose a comprehensive theory of codemixed discourse, encompassing equivalencepoint and insertional code-switching, palindromic constructions and lexical borrowing. The starting point is a production model of code-switching accounting for empirical observations about switch-point distribution (the equivalence constraint), well-formedness of monolingual fragments, conservation of constituent...

This study attempted to investigate the impact of teacher’s code-switching on the acquisition of a problematic grammatical structure, namely, object relative clauses, by intermediate EFL learners. Moreover, a secondary objective of the study was to determine the EFL learners’ attitudes and opinions regarding the effectiveness of teacher’s code-switching in their learning of a specific aspect of...
متن کاملIs this word borrowed? An automatic approach to quantify the likeliness of borrowing in social media
Code-mixing or code-switching refer to the phenomenon of effortless and natural switching between two or more languages in a single conversation, sometimes even in a single utterance, by multilingual speakers. However, use a foreign word in a language does not necessarily mean that the speaker is code-switching, because often languages borrow lexical items from other languages. If a word is bor...
